The .ORG gTLD was originally intended for non-profit organizations. That being said, there are no restrictions in registering a .ORG domain name and you do not need to be a non profit organization to do so.
.ORG is one of the original top level domains along with .COM and .NET. A short generic .ORG or a short acronym in this extension can make an excellent alternative to a lengthy .COM.
